Rabies — Post-Exposure Protocol
Zoonotic
Human PEP following bite by suspected rabid animal:
1. Irrigate wound immediately with soap and water for minimum 15 minutes
2. Apply 70% ethanol or povidone-iodine
3. Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) at wound site + anti-rabies vaccine on Day 0
4. Vaccine on Days 3, 7, 14 (Day 28 if immunocompromised)
5. Notify CMO / public health authority immediately

Animal observation: Observe for 10 days. Progressive neurological signs → humane euthanasia and submit brain for FAT confirmation.

Critical Poultry Pathogens
Newcastle Disease (Ranikhet)
Most impactful poultry disease in India. Sudden mortality, torticollis, green diarrhoea, neurological signs. Notifiable. No treatment — prevention via Lasota vaccination every 2–3 months in endemic areas.

Gumboro (IBD)
Destroys bursa of Fabricius causing permanent immunosuppression. Affects chicks 3–6 weeks. Intermediate live vaccine in drinking water — timing critical due to maternal antibody interference.
Avian Influenza (H5N1/H9N2)
Highly pathogenic — zoonotic. Sudden mass mortality. Notifiable. Do not enter premises without PPE (N95 + coverall + goggles). Report immediately to State Animal Husbandry Department.

Marek's Disease
Herpesvirus. Paralysis of limbs/wings, grey eye, visceral tumours. Hatchery vaccination only — maternal antibodies render post-hatch vaccination ineffective.
